5 Questions to Boost Your Child’s EQ
Apr 24, 2026
Ask, don’t tell.
Your child tells you about a problem. You are immediately thinking about solutions and step in with all possible answers and options.
Take a step back. You’re probably depriving them of opportunities to think for themselves.
In our attempt to prevent them from making mistakes and to insure good outcomes, we do too much for our children.
In doing too much, we actually put them at a disadvantage: they don't know how to move through real-life, real-world situations. Their emotional growth is stunted.
That's the problem. Let's move on to a tool to reverse this pattern.
To build their Emotional Intelligence (EQ), self-awareness and problem-solving muscles, ask rather than tell. Ask curious questions:
- What has worked for you before?
- Who could you ask for help?
- What could your next step be?
- What do you need right now?
- What do you want me to know about this?
Be their guide into independence and satisfaction. Ask, don't tell.
