Active Looking: Catch Your Kid Doing Something Good
Aug 11, 2024𝘼𝘾𝙏𝙄𝙑𝙀 𝙇𝙊𝙊𝙆𝙄𝙉𝙂: Catch your kid doing something good.
You’ve heard of active listening. Now let’s do some active looking.
Every week there’s a post in my group that asks, “𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙖𝙙𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙩𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙥𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙠?” Here are real answers. Some may surprise you.
-
Bought me a mother’s day card and present, on his own.
-
Called to ask if I needed anything at the grocery store. It was thoughtful.
-
Stood up for herself.
-
Finished her AP exam.
-
Graduated 3 programs
-
Owned a mistake, didn’t blame anyone or complain.
-
Son wants to learn to cook to reduce eating out.
-
Lead in Beauty & the Best musical.
-
Volunteered at event to repair and clean up homes in need.
-
Took responsibility for his grades in school.
It’s our job - and our pleasure to 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙠𝙞𝙙𝙨 𝙙𝙤 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙. As you can see from the list, there’s more to it than their accomplishments.
Take a random moment to 𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮’𝙫𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪. Your child needs to know that you see them as more than their problems and challenges (because we are so much more than complaining about our kids)!
This is what we do in Connected Moms and Teens: we look for the good and we celebrate it.
